Wearing its fourth paint scheme, Black River and Western RS3 1554 stands near the engine house in Ringoes, New Jersey. The Alco began life as Jersey Central 1554, wearing the CNJ’s green scheme with two wide yellow stripes. In the mid-1970’s, the RS3 was repainted in the CNJ’s “Red Baron” scheme before being sold to the BR&W, where it was repainted into the road’s conservative green paint scheme. Around 1983, the BR&W adopted a more modern look, and applied it to several of its locomotives, as seen here.
The 1554’s paint scheme went full circle when the Alco was acquired by the Hawk Mountain Chapter, NRHS and the group restored the unit to its original livery. Today, the 1554 still wears its CNJ paint as part of the Delaware-Lackawanna roster.
