Leading First 103, the City of Los Angeles westbound, Union Pacific E9A 951 pops out of the cut at the west end of Hermosa Tunnel on June 18, 1964. The first section of this luxury liner handles eight or more sleepers, a dome-diner and dome-lounge where breakfast is already being cleared away. Soon the staff will be setting out the “Sun Valley Horse Lunch Menu,” which offers fried shrimp, hot roast beef sandwich, chicken ala king, and UP’s famous chef salad. In a half hour or so Second 103 will be along with the coach section. Both sections will pull into LA in about 24 hours.
