The sun sets at Norfolk Southern's Coal Pier 6 at Lambert's Point in Norfolk, Virginia. Coal Pier 6 is one of the largest, fastest, and most technologically advanced transloading facilities for coal in the Northern Hemisphere - quickly moving coal transported by rail to ships for export. It began operating in 1963, and cost the Norfolk and Western Railway $25 million. The facility is much quieter these days, as coal exports are significantly in decline.
