I still have a hard time accepting that the Southern Pacific is no longer the railroad that serves scenic San Luis Obispo, on California's central coast. On July 31st, 1999, not long after the SP was merged into the Union Pacific system, UP SD40-2 3942 idles away in the small yard opposite the Amtrak station. UP 3942 was built by EMD in June 1979 as Missouri Pacific 6042. It was renumbered to UP 3942 on September 22nd, 1987.
