| A westbound Union Pacific grain train highlights the precarious perch of UP's Canyon Subdivision as it drifts 'downstream' west of Merlin. Built by the Western Pacific Railroad the rails through the scenic and spectacular confines of the canyon were carved into rock walls, often perched high above the railroad's most famous trademark, the Feather River. Western Pacific's 3rd Subdivision was folded into the Union Pacific in 1982 along with the Western Pacific itself however today those rails still host the trains of successor Union Pacific as well as those of BNSF. |
