        Geeps?

A first glance at this pair would suggest that two Conrail blue Alco RS3’s are in the yard at Altoona. Considering that, to the best of my knowledge, no unaltered RS3’s received a Conrail blue repaint, the impression would be incorrect. Under the long hoods of these units was an EMD 567 engine made surplus by the retirement of dozens of E units, which each had two of the V12’s. Started by the Penn Central at DeWitt, New York, the RS3 re-engine program was continued by Conrail and performed at the Juniata shops. Just shy of one hundred of these “DeWitt Geeps” were produced between 1972 and 1979. Conrail 9937 and 9932 began life as CNJ 1548 and Erie 1019, respectively.
