Remarks & Notes

The ArcelorMittal Quebec Cartier Mining Corporation's weekly employee passenger train from Port Cartier to Mount Wright, Quebec, to service all of the online camps and the Fire Lake raw ore mine as well as the Mount Wright processing plant, is seen along Petit-Lac-Manicouagan with intense Aurora Borealis activity ALL over the sky. Calling it the northern lights during this trip would be a misnomer as they were frequently well south of our locations. The train consists of a HEP car, a storage/food service boxcar and a trio of ex-New Jersey Transit passenger coaches. AMMC SD70ACe #9003 leads the 5-car train - symbol P-31 (passenger - 31st train - 31st week of year) across the Hydro-Quebec Hart-Jaune Dam on Petit-Lac-Manicouagan at 2350 hrs on August 3, on the way toward Fire Lake and Mont Wright. The image was made as a multi-image in-camera photo using the tripod and a several second exposure for the Aurora, followed by a flash lit image of the train as it passed by at 30 mph.
