| Union Pacific's 7679 east is just about finished with its trip across seemingly endless mud flats and salt pans of the Great Salt Lake Desert as it approaches Lakeside, Utah. The last 58 miles from Lucin to Lakeside have been nearly dead level and curveless. The beginning of the Lakeside siding is only a little over a mile away and then it's out to sea on the Rambo Fill to Promontory Point. Those brilliant white salt evaporation pans in the foreground and rugged Strong's Knob behind the train are landmarks on the Lakeside Sub. |
