      Remarks & Notes
A Conrail MoW gondola sits on the remains of the old Lehigh & Hudson River main. The L&HR railroad was a bridge line running northeast-southwest across northwestern New Jersey. This was the L&HR main up until the company filed for bankruptcy in 1972 and then subsequently was merged into Conrail in 1976. After that Conrail abandoned the line from Belvediere to Sparta NJ. The tracks remained in place until 1988, when the right-of-way between these two points was acquired by land developer Gerald Turco from Conrail. Most of the track and ties were removed. The western most part of the right of way was never cleared and a pair of old gondolas were left behind by Conrail. The gondola pictured here is still full of old rotting ties pulled in 1988. With the breakup of Conrail, these gondolas are now in the possession of Norfolk Southern. A few years back, there was talk of NS donating the cars to a local tourist railroad but the deal never happened. And NS has since severed the line from the Portland Secondary, ending any chance of these cars rolling out.
