As mainline Alco’s were being phased out on most Class 1 railroads, the Delaware & Hudson became large draw with its sizable fleet of RS’s and Centuries. When the New York Susquehanna & Western established its Northern Division in 1982, it supplemented its Alco collection of RS3’s and RS1’s with five C430’s and two C420’s. The Centuries were used for local service, and for the newly established right to run haulage trains over the Southern Tier between its Northern and Southern Divisions. This sealed Binghamton, New York’s standing as a contender for Alco center of the galaxy, rivalling Green Bay and Eagle Mills.
