The World’s Fair Daylight works upgrade at Allard on the Tehachapi grade. It seems to me that the 4449 was having a minor issue, as it was alternately putting up dark clouds of smoke and then would have a clean stack. Whatever the issue, it was eventually worked out. The helpers were dropped on the east side of Tehachapi, and the 4-8-4 ran to LA unassisted.
