I climbed a very steep, rocky ridge right at the west edge of the Great Salt Lake to get some elevation for this shot. I vowed to myself to spend the whole day up there if necessary, and it turned out to be necessary given the low train count these days on the Overland Route. From my perch I was able to see the tracks east about 16 miles to Promontory Point and in this view looking to the west, 15 miles to Hogup Ridge. It was a great spot. The first train finally appeared after a 3 hour wait; a very long eastbound work train led by UP 7693. This train was a gang repositioning move as it had many vehicles, on-track equipment, supplies and misc. stuff including port-a-potties. I later found out it was headed to Hackberry, Kansas. Those diked ponds seen on both sides of the track are solar evaporation ponds for mineral salt production. Hogup Ridge is the far western horizon after which it is over 40 more straight and nearly dead level miles to Lucin, Utah and the west end of the Great Salt Lake Desert.
