Another cold day in the High Sierras draws to a close but the action is just beginning for the Union Pacific Railroad. Throughout the day, the Truckee-based Jordan Spreaders were working to clear the tracks of snow. Dispatcher 74 had his hands tied as he could not efficiently move trains between Shed 47 and Switch 9 while the spreaders were operating. Amtrak's westbound California Zephyr was stopped at Shed 47 for approximately five hours, a move that was not popular with the corridor manager. Finally, as the afternoon drug on into the evening, the spreaders cleared up, allowing Dispatcher 74 to utilize both main tracks between Norden and Shed 10. In this shot, the heavy MRVNP (left) waits patiently for its opportunity at the Big Hole, while the hot (and delayed) ZG2OA races by on the #2 track. A thick bank of fog has blanketed the large mountain peaks in the distance.
