The MBTA's first F40PH clatters across the Conrail diamond at Walpole station with a Boston- Franklin train. When Walpole station was built in 1883, this was a crossing of the New York & New England RR (now the MBTA Forge Park line) and the Old Colony RR (now the CSX Mansfield-Framingham branch). This station is still in use in 2017, but the semaphore is history.
The 70's and 80's were a transition period for the MBTA characterized by an eclectic mix of equipment including Budd RDC's, ex-New Haven stainless steel coaches, and a mix of motive power acquired from various railroads.
A cross-over structure is sometimes called a diamond junction or diamond crossing in reference to the diamond-shaped center. A diamond crossing is also used as a component of a double junction.
