          Remarks & Notes
No, this is no April Fool's joke...there really are two, brand new Siemens SC-44 Chargers sitting in Los Angeles on this sunny afternoon. Rather than heading north to begin their service on Amtrak's Cascades, these new units still need to have their 500-mile "burn in" completed before they can officially enter revenue service up north. Because of this, Amtrak is currently shipping the units dead-in-tow (DIT) via Amtrak's southbound Coast Starlight to Los Angeles where they are then attached to the eastbound Southwest Chief. Once in Colorado, the units will be dropped from the Chief and sent to the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) test track to complete the necessary break-in before finally heading back west and north to the Pacific Northwest to begin their career.

Tier IV locomotives are the safest, cleanest, and most fuel efficient locomotives on the rails today. Unfortunately, most of them are ugly and are as quiet as an ACS-64.
