An MBTA FP-10 and a string of leased GO Transit coaches await their departure from Lowell, MA, for Boston. The little machine to their left was a British Leyland railbus that ran for a short time on an experimental midday run between Lowell and Concord, NH, an experiment that ended when it was involved in a grade crossing accident.
The 70's and 80's were a transition period for the MBTA characterized by an eclectic mix of equipment including Budd RDC's, ex-New Haven stainless steel coaches, and a mix of motive power acquired from various railroads.
