| Last of her kind, Southern Pacific AC-12 Class "Cab-Forward" #4294 was also the last new steam locomotive ordered by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Designed to battle the long, steep grades over Donner Pass and their numerous tunnels and snowsheds, Southern Pacific's cab-forward design placed crews ahead of the exhaust to prevent asphyxiation. |
