      Remarks & Notes
You gotta have a caboose. And you want to get home. Given such a challenge railroaders can be very creative. Their regular caboose was bad ordered in Chama, and there was no spare. So rather than wait for a carman to fix their caboose, this former RPO now a rotary train engiineman's cook car was pressed into service. The good news is it got them home sooner rather than later. The bad news is rather than a warm comfortable cupola from which to watch the train, they had to lean out a side door into the wind and rain. So it was going to be a long day getting back to Alamosa, probably close to sixteen hours. But the reward would be a home cooked meal and a warm bed that night.

The DRGW narrow gauge was the last major steam operation in the U.S. The climb over 10,000 foot Cumbres pass was spectacular, with two engines handling 70 car trains. Hopefully these images convey some of the drama of mountain steam railroading.
