Rock Island GP40 no. 343 lead a group of RI power at their engine facility at Inver Grove Heights, MN near St. Paul. As seen third unit back, the maroon scheme was giving way to red, much like the ink flowing on the road's balance sheet. RI offered single line service from the Twin Ciites to Texas, Denver, Kansas City, Memphis and Chicago.
