In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, Boeing-Vertol produced the US Standard Light Rail Vehicle. A total of 275 articulated railcars were sold to Boston’s MBTA and San Francisco’s MUNI. The LRV’s were trouble-plagued, and the final ones were retired in 2001 and 2007 by MUNI and MBTA, respectively. Here a new one fresh from Boeing’s Philadelphia factory pauses in Conrail’s yard in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The foggy conditions provide acclimation for the San Francisco weather conditions.
