As passengers head for boarding Amtrak’s California Zephyr, an original California Zephyr dome-observation “Silver Solarium” is seen on Track 4 at Denver Union Station and will soon to be added to Amtrak No. 5 on the morning of February 5, 2018. This Burlington car, along with former Pennsylvania 10-6 sleeper “Silver Rapids” (PRR’s contribution to the “Zephyr pool” of sleepers) saw many visits to Denver Union Station before on this route of the original California Zephyr operated from 1949 to 1970. One track over next to the classy cars is Amtrak’s Superliner-equipped Winter Park Express, waiting on Track 5 for weekend trips to the ski resort.
