Originally built as EMD demonstrators 434A-434H; purchased by UP 4/66. 3040-3045 are built on SD35 frames, shorter than the SD40 frame, and consequently came with flared radiator panels much like those used on SD45's. 3046-3047 were the first units built on standard SD40 frames.
