On a dark, cold, snowless Wisconsin winter day, Burlington Northern’s specially-painted EMD SD60M No. 1991 to honor U.S. troops serving in Operation Desert Storm in the Gulf War. A large seal of the United States graced the mostly white front of the locomotive as it leads Soo Line’s westbound hotshot freight No. 425 at the end of double track main line at Pewaukee on January 15, 1995. The train is pausing briefly to meet Amtrak’s eastbound Empire Builder, which for some reason that day is powered by only one EMD F40PH.
The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
