| Big Eagle Railroad's SW1500 switches the West Carbon Mine loadout. The railroad goes back to 1881 with the chartering of the Winifrede Railroad to serve the coal mines in the Fields Creek drainage. The first railroad actually opened in 1854. The railroad still runs (at least when I was there in June 2018) the six miles between Winifrede Jct. in Chesapeake, WV on the Kanawha River and the West Carbon Mine. The river barge transloading facility closed in 2013 and hoppers now are interchanged with the CSX. |
