The Illinois Central 13 SD40A's of EMD Order 5743 were unique locomotives, as they were essentially 3000-h.p. SD40's built on five-foot-longer SDP45 frames to accommodate a 5,000-gallon fuel tank (normal SD40's have a 4,000-gallon tank). The 6005-6017 also had extended-range dynamic brakes, the L-shaped engineer's front windows and Gyralites.
The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
