| A historic day for the Great Western route as the 'Intercity 125' or HST bows out of traffic from London Paddington after 43 years. To mark the event Great Western Railway used their last four serviceable HST's on duties covering most of their former routes. The day culminated with a meeting of the last four trains at Paddington Station before the final departures. The final train would be the 18:30 Paddington - Taunton (extended to Exeter St Davids) formed to be worked by the first (43002) an last (43198) production power cars. The train was reservation only and sold out weeks in advance. Prior to the final departures the two heritage liveried power cars, 43002 and 43185 line up on the blocks at Paddington. Hundreds of enthusiasts had turned out to mark the occasions. Celebrities present included Sir Kenneth Grange, the designer of the Intercity 125 after whom 43002 is currently named. |
