The Chicago & North Western Transportation Company (CNW) operated for over 130 years. Based in Chicago, this Class 1 Railroad primarily served the heart of the Midwest, including the states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, South Dakota and of course Illinois. In the late 1920's, the CNW constructed it's Proviso Rail Yard in the western suburbs of Chicago. With over 200 miles of track and the capacity to handle 20,000 cars, Proviso was once thought to be the largest rail yard of its kind in the world. In 1995, CNW Corporation was purchased and integrated into the Union Pacific Railroad. Today, Union Pacific has conjoined the Proviso Rail Yard with their large intermodal hub known as "Global 2". Together, Proviso and Global 2 make up one of the largest rail operation yards in the country. In this shot, Union Pacific 1995, which is specially painted to commemorate the CNW Railroad, leads the high priority "ZG2OA" over the Donner Pass Route. This train originated at Global 2 (Proviso), the once stronghold of the Chicago & North Western. Soon, this train will arrive at the Port of Oakland, completely the 2,000 mile journey across America.
