| In the cab of the world most powerful narrow gauge (Cape gauge 1067 mm or 3 ft 6 inch) steamlocomotive of the world, the iconic "Red Devil" class 26 # 3450, standing cold in the Worcester North depot. Coal fired with stoker from the 20 ton tender capacity. The locomotive was rebuilt from 1979 to 1981 by the english mechanical engineer David Wardale while in the employ of the South African Railways. The rebuilding took place at the Salt River Works in Cape Town and was based on the principles developed by Argentinian mechanical engineer L.D. Porta. The origin is a class 25NC built in 1953 by Henschel/Kassel/Germany for the South African Railways (SAR). The locomotive is operational again since summer 2018 for the Ceres Rail Company and pulled a photo freight for FarRail Tours between Worcester and Ashton and back three days before. |
