Westbound out of Conway. After loading logs, stone and boxed goods, Conway Scenic Railroad's Canadian National 0-6-0 departs the Conway Yard with a branch line freight, bound for North Conway and points west. The old freight house pictured here dates to the early 1870s and was likely built by the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad as their line was extended north to North Conway. This line was eventually absorbed into the Boston & Maine system as their Conway Branch. The line was finally abandoned by the B&M in 1972, and within a couple of years was purchased by the newly-formed Conway Scenic Railroad, which operates tourist excursions there today. The event seen here was part of the Conway Scenic's Railfan Weekend, in which special trains, like this freight, were operated in addition to the normal tourist runs to Conway, Bartlett, and Crawford Notch.
