    Remarks & Notes
Going up? Car #1 nears the top of Lookout Mountain as it crawls through the trees and into the rocky trench thats makes up the final few hundred feet of the trip. Built in 1895, Lookout Mountain Incline Railway operates on a 1-mile track that at its peak hits a 72.7% grade. It has 2 cars fastened to two pulleys and counterweights which allow them to safely travel up and down the mountain. A small passing track in the middle faciltates passes. It is considered a Historical Mechanical Engineering Landmark and sees over 20,000 visitors a year. For locals when it snows and ices, the incline provides a safe method to get up and down the mountain. At first one may take the glass roof to be solely for letting sunlight in, but at the peak of the 72.7% grade one seated in the trolley can, to a limited extent, look out the roof to see the beautiful view and the city of Chattanooga.
