Reflecting on the Raritan. As NJ TRANSIT Train 3255 heads towards South Amboy on the evening of Wednesday, November 13, 2019 and traverses the Raritan River at just before sunset, the presence of ALP46A 4636 (Pennsylvania Heritage) evokes a memory of (in my case photos of) real Pennsylvania Railroad engines transporting commuters and beachgoers over the jointly owned New York & Long Branch. In that era, the electric engine would have been pulled off in South Amboy and replaced with a diesel if the train was to continue to Bayhead, but today's arrangement would have this train ending in Long Branch with the extension of the electrification. Trains to Bayhead are either powered by either a dual mode or straight diesel, thus eliminating the engine change.
