          Wagons East!!!

For years, I've joked with fellow coworker and RailPictures contribuitor Elijah Cross about getting a very long telephoto lens and shooting the intermediate pair of semaphore signals between Levy and Wagon Mound. Well, this is that shot, pulled far out, to about 310mm on a Sigma 150-600. Something a little bit different than the normal semaphore shot usually seen here.

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.

Photos showing the railroad pole lines. The pole line used four basic electrical circuits - telegraph, telephone, signaling, and power. Modern technologies of fiber optics, microwave, radio, satellite, and computers have been replacing the pole lines.
