A westbound Montana Rail Link ballast train led by SD45 No. 346, rumbles through scenic Jefferson River Canyon between Sappington and Whitehall, Montana, on June 26, 2019. The empty train is heading for the pit on the Spire Rock Industrial Lead west of Pipestone. On the other side of the river is the empty grade of Milwaukee Road’s electrified Pacific Extension main line that once paralleled this former Northern Pacific main line through this canyon toward Butte.
