    Remarks & Notes
Mixed freight to Sunol. With a marine fog bank just beginning to burn off of Niles Canyon, Clover Valley Baldwin #4 hauls a consist of mixed freight east toward Sunol. Operating on roughly 6.5 miles of track between the Niles section of Fremont, California, and Sunol, the Niles Canyon Railway was once part of the Central Pacific portion of the original Transcontinental Railroad. This section was completed in 1869 and linked Sacramento to the San Francisco Bay Area. Although it quickly became a secondary line, trains from the Central Pacific, and later, the Southern Pacific, operated here from 1869 until 1984, when the Southern Pacific finally ceased operations here. Since then, the line has been operated by the Pacific Locomotive Association as a tourist railway and museum. The operation depicted in this photo was a photo freight run in February of 2020 for Lerro Productions, Inc.
