The Lehigh Valley Railroad slipped into oblivion seven years prior to this mid 1983 scene at Lehighton, Pennsylvania, but it still carries a distinct presence. The yard at Lehighton, which was largely on the opposite side of the main, declined after the 1967 Joint Trackage Agreement with the Jersey Central, and has become a field of bushes, but a few tracks remain on this side of the main tracks. Although the former Erie caboose is a post-Conrail transplant, the dynamic brake equipped former LV SW8’s and empty hoppers continue to serve the anthracite mines on the Hazleton branch. Two one-time LV C420’s, the lead one almost completely free of any re-markings, lead a Southbound Delaware & Hudson train. The first two cars, an LV box car and a CN box car, evoke memories of D&H/LV run through train NE87.
