A rare Conrail U36B, one of just four on the roster, heads up a U33B and a GP40 on an empty coal train passing the Boston & Maine's Ayer, MA, tower. Coal trains serving a power plant at Bow, NH, on the B&M began running in the late 1960s with P&LE/NYC/B&M runthrough power.
The Bow Coal Train delivered coal from the mines of West Virginia to the power plant in Bow, NH.
It was a joint effort run by the Boston & Maine with several other railroads over the years including the NYC, Penn Central, Conrail, and the P&LE.
