Power on Freeport McMoRan’s first train to the Arizona Eastern’s interchange yard at Clifton, Arizona, is at the very end of track, to leave enough headroom so FMI’s second train that is following it down the hill can switch the cars in the yard. Old foundations and ruins on the canyon wall behind the locomotives is the former site of Arizona Copper Company’s smelter, closed in 1913.
