"Tied Down Over Nostrand"
Long Island Railroad's rail reclaim train sits tied down for the morning on the Atlantic Branch Viaduct just over Nostrand Avenue during the rainy morning of January 16th, 2021. Early morning traffic on Atlantic Avenue holds at the intersection below.
The rail reclaim train picks up old rails along the right of way to send out for scrap and recycling. The train was also used to drop small sections of new rail where a normal Continuous Welded Rail train would not fit. The train consists of LIRR's only two running EMD SW1001s (103 & 105) for power and 7 open-ended gondolas. These moves mark the first time a diesel has ran on the Atlantic Branch east of East New York in 4 years and prior to that, over a decade.
Railroading is a 24 hour a day business, that never sleep. From sunset to sunrise the railroad must run. These image are taken by some of the best rail photographer out their.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
