On a crisp March morning, a former Amtrak SDP40F ATSF 5564(former Amtrak 632) rounds the horseshoe curve out of Esperanza in the Santa Ana Canyon hills on the San Bernardino Subdivision. Santa Fe purchased 18 of these brutes in 1984 and modified the front nose and pilot in the late 80s. Still they didn’t prove to be popular leaders for crews and became odd ugly ducklings off spring in the roster. ATSF would designate them as SDF40-2s.
