A local farmer meets the train. Back in the days before motorized vehicles and good roads were common in rural Maine, local farmers would typically bring their produce to the railway and pick up supplies with real, no-kidding horsepower. Here, one hardy Maine Farmer arrives at Alna Center to pick up a load of finished lumber that is arriving on a WW&F southbound mixed train. In the cab, Engineman Bill Piche watches carefully as his train negotiates the north switch in the Alna Center Yard.
Interestingly, the team of draft horses pictured here does indeed come from a local farm in the Alna Center area and they make regular appearances at public events at the WW&F Museum, including the popular Victorian Christmas, and Steam and Sleighs. A couple of years back, they even participated in a re-enactment of the dismantlement of the original railroad for the benefit of photographers.
