Lotsa curves. In the pretty morning sun, V&T Locomotive #29 takes a short freight up the hill from Carson City to Virginia City, by about the most circuitous route you could imagine. Nicknamed the "Crookedest Short-line in America", the original V&T Virginia City Line out of Carson City, NV, had enough degrees of curve to make 17 complete circles. Although today's reconstructed line is considerably shorter than the original.....it doesn't go all the way to downtown Carson City, it is still about 12 miles in length and there are not a lot of straight stretches of track. The train basically follows the contours of the hills, as needed, to keep the grade at a steady 2.2%. The train is pictured here, coming out of a cut near American Flat, at about MP 48, or just about 2 miles south of Gold Hill Depot and perhaps 3.5 miles from its eventual destination, in Virginia City, NV.
