A Westbound unit grain train is seen just after cresting the 5,213-foot summit at Marias Pass. Summit Mountain, which has a peak of 8,770 feet is seen in the background on the right. The 8,609-foot peak of Little Dog Mountain is on the left. John F. Stevens first explored the pass in 1889, hired by James J. Hill to engineer the Great Northern Railway over the Continental Divide. By comparison, Marias is much lower than other points across the divide.
