Remarks & Notes

Perhaps the loneliest line in the land, BNSF's route via Raton Pass has been forsaken but for Amtrak's daily train. At the time of this photo, however, the route also carried a daily manifest between Denver and Barstow and occasional coal trains that doubled over Raton Pass. Here Amtrak's Southwest Chief is racing across the New Mexico plains past this line's endearing feature - the 1920s vintage US&S semaphore signals. Although some steadfastly remain, these at the east end of Levy have fallen.
