Remarks & Notes

The first diesel locomotives that helped end the 'Empire of Steam' in the United States are commonly overlooked, when compared to locomotives like the E8, GP9's and so forth. One of these firsts was the EMC EA, and the first locomotive of this class to be built was the famous B&O #51. A remarkable design, the #51 and sister engines were key in showing the B&O that diesels were the way of the future, and steam would all but be gone by the 1960's. At somepoint, the #51 too was sidelined by newer diesels and a changing passenger market. After many years of waiting to be restored at the B&O Railroad Museum, the hard-working volunteers of the museum completed a 5-1/2 year restoration to bring the locomotive back to its completely original cosmetic condition. Salutations to them!
