Steamscape: Whitehead Gulch. One of the most challenging, yet spectacular photo locations on the old D&RGW Silverton Line is this little spot at MP 491.95, about 5 miles south of Silverton. Known as Whitehead Gulch, this is the location where Whitehead Creek empties into the Animas River. This spot is almost always backlit when the train arrives here, making both the exposure and the edit a bit tricky. In this 2009 scene, Locomotive #473, a K-28 "Sports Model" executes a firebox blow-down as she continues her northbound trek with a passenger consist at the height of fall colors season.
