Remarks & Notes
Big Steam in Big Snow
American Coal Enterprises’ data collection of Chesapeake & Ohio 4-8-4 614’s performance occurred during most of the month of January, 1985. January in West Virginia meant that my friends and I didn’t see a lot of sun during our two trips to see the big 4-8-4 pull 100-car coal trains. Here 614 pulls a train of empties east through Thurmond, West Virginia in a driving snow storm. The saturated air provides no dissipation for the smoke and steam, causing almost complete obliteration of the scene.
