Arriving at Matterhorn. A Rio Grande Southern freight extra has just arrived in the tiny hamlet of Matternhorn (MP 46.71), CO, and will pause here to perform some engine service before taking on the climb to the pass at Lizard Head (MP 52.61), some 6 miles to the south.
This August of 2021 re-enactment of an RGS freight was staged on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and this specific scene is, of course, the Section House at Sublette, NM (MP 306.6)....with the location sign appropriately altered. On the original RGS line, Matterhorn was indeed the home of a section crew and the location featured a section house, bunk house, and a spur track. There was also an ore processing mill located adjacent to the tracks, just northwest of the section house.
