It Happens. From time to time when a dual mode (third rail electric or diesel powered) P32 is not available, Amtrak will use P42s in Empire Service. Some of Penn Station’s platforms contain ventilation systems for this contingency. On December 5, 2021, Amtrak Train 284 was lead by AMTK 113 from Niagara Falls, New York all the to New York Penn/Moynihan Station. The train is seen operating southbound on Track 1 passing the elegant former New York Central station in Philipse Manor, New York.
