Southern E8 #6900 slumbers at the North Carolina Transportation Museum. The locomotive is fully operational but is not part of regular service at this time. Regardless, it is shown spending the night tucked away safe and sound in the massive back shop building. In 2005, the massive building began a lengthy renovation, including repairs to the roof, floor, walls and installation of fire control. This building used to be the Southern Railway's home of steam locomotive overhaul and major maintenance. The cavernous building is two football fields long and nearly three stories tall, easily swallowing a large locomotive and multiple other exhibit items.
