    Remarks & Notes
    Alpenglow and Deep Snow
Heavy snowfall Friday night left a winter wonderland under the Great Divide overnight at Rollins Pass. Here’s the deal, due to the routine relentless high winds under these majestic thirteen and fourteeners a valley in full flock rarely lasts a matter of hours. As soon as the sun makes its full appearance the temp shoots up and the thermals create high wind gusts that strip the snow from the trees. Sunrise in the Alpine is a dance of reflected and subdued cotton candy colors only intensified by the reflective white snow for the first 10-15 minutes. I am absolutely mesmerized by Alpenglow especially in a full valley of flocked trees and rock. To describe this scene and present it in a photo is merely impossible to convey its grandeur. You soon forget the subzero windchill on your face. My photo partner here on railpictures as Buffie and I started on a mission to attempt this scene that is so rare and witnessed by generally only the locals as any one could assume the drive up the valley is an icy nightmare and even for the locals it’s a mission of dedication. I wear cleats and cold weather gear whenever I got out in the hills, snowshoes are also helpful and I am glad I did this morning. Experience has taught me these steep inclines covered in a foot of fresh powder defy a hike fraught with danger. To my astonishment the Union Pacific MGJNY and BNSF HPVODEN1 were in parade all beginning at first light leading to a dream realized for me to capture a scene like this with the Alpenglow and winter best in full flock. Timing is everything and it was this morning I’m grateful for the opportunity to be there.
